New public minibus service begins in Dubai
Involves app-based booking system
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority has launched a new public minibus pooling initiative. The initiative allows passengers in the Dubai emirate to book minibus rides through an app-based booking system.
The service is designed to provide a fast, convenient, and efficient transportation solution for Dubai’s public bus users. It is being rolled out in collaboration with three private-sector companies specialising in public transport systems.
The service aims to expand and enhance Dubai’s public transport network, addressing the emirate’s growing demand for sustainable, flexible, and reliable mobility options.
The service will initially be available in Deira, connecting key areas such as Business Bay, Dubai Mall, Mirdif, and Dubai Festival City. It will gradually be extended to other parts of the emirate. The initiative reflects RTA’s strategic vision to reduce dependence on private vehicles and alleviate traffic congestion across Dubai.
Unlike regular Dubai RTA’s public buses, the new public minibus service operates without fixed routes. Instead, minibuses run on demand, and bookings can be made via three apps: Citylink Shuttle, DrivenBus, and Fluxx Daily.
Each of the three private companies in the project operates 20 minibuses, each seating 13 to 30 passengers. Fares vary based on distance and demand.
The new service offers single-trip options and subscription plans, including weekly and monthly passes, to accommodate diverse commuter needs.
Ahmed Hashim Bahrozyan, CEO of Duba RTA’s Public Transport Agency, said: “This initiative will attract new segments of the community by providing a fast, convenient transport option that can help reduce traffic and encourage the use of authorised transport over unlicensed alternatives.”
Bahrozyan emphasised that this initiative aligns with Dubai RTA’s goals of fostering integrated, sustainable transport solutions and leveraging advanced technologies to provide cost-effective, on-demand services. The service’s flexible scheduling and ability to pre-book seats make it a user-friendly solution for passengers.
The initiative represents the future of Dubai’s public transport system by offering a flexible, efficient, and comfortable option that will help shape a more connected and sustainable city.
