‘Year of Community’: How UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation Plays a Pioneering Role in Promoting Community Values

In line with the UAE leadership’s declaration of 2025 as the Year of the Community, the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation (UAEJJF) has reaffirmed its role in fostering social cohesion and strengthening community values through a range of initiatives and programmes.

The Federation remains committed to organising championships throughout the year, engaging various segments of society to promote active participation and encourage a healthy lifestyle. Among its flagship events is the Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Jiu-Jitsu Championship, launched last year, with rounds held across different emirates. Open to athletes from the age of four and above, the championship promotes active community involvement and cultural exchange while reinforcing social unity.

H.E. Abdulmunem Alsayed Mohamed Alhashmi, Chairman of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation, said: “The declaration of 2025 as the Year of the Community is an opportunity to highlight jiu-jitsu’s role in strengthening social cohesion, as it embodies values of unity and cooperation. Through our events and partnerships with national institutions, we aim to build a healthy and active society where the family remains central. We will continue to develop initiatives that promote social solidarity in line with the vision of our wise leadership.”

As part of its community-focused initiatives, The Federation works with key public and private sector partners, including the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, to support sporting events through the ‘Fitness District,” introduced during jiu-jitsu championships. It combines sport, entertainment, and culture to promote community engagement and a healthy lifestyle.

Additionally, the Federation actively participates in community outreach programmes in collaboration with civil society organisations. Notable among these is the annual Iftar kit distribution during the holy month of Ramadan, reflecting the Federation’s commitment to social responsibility and the core values of jiu-jitsu, particularly solidarity and cohesion.

Another significant initiative is the OSS Volunteer Team, operating under the UAEJJF’s umbrella, which plays a key role in supporting sporting and community events through volunteer-driven efforts.

The UAEJJF also champions inclusivity by organising Para-Jiu-Jitsu competitions for People of Determination. These initiatives reinforce the Federation’s commitment to making jiu-jitsu accessible to all segments of society, further strengthening the sport’s role as a unifying force within the community.
