Airbus selects Engie to lead decarbonisation of its European operations

Involving 22 sites

Airbus has selected the French energy group Engie to lead a large-scale decarbonisation project across its 22 industrial sites in Europe, aiming to reduce energy use and carbon emissions significantly by 2030.

The move is part of Airbus’s broader sustainability strategy, with potential implications for aerospace supply chains in the Middle East and Africa.

An agreement was signed during the 2025 Paris Air Show following a competitive tender.

Under the terms of the agreement, Engie will implement site-specific low-carbon energy solutions at relevant Airbus production sites. These initiatives will include the installation of heat pumps and biomass boilers to replace fossil-fuel-based heating systems, as well as energy efficiency upgrades such as LED lighting and smart metering, and the deployment of photovoltaic panels on rooftops and other surfaces. Additionally, Engie will introduce innovative energy control systems to manage consumption in real-time.

Airbus aims to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by up to 85% at selected industrial sites by 2030, compared to 2015 levels. Energy consumption is also expected to fall by around 20 per cent. Scope 1 encompasses direct emissions from sources that are owned or controlled, while Scope 2 refers to indirect emissions resulting from the purchase of electricity.

The initial phase of the project, starting this summer, involves conducting engineering assessments to map out individual decarbonisation roadmaps. Full project deployment will begin gradually in 2026, with all installations expected to be completed by 2029. Engie will oversee the operation and maintenance of the systems once commissioned.

This partnership builds on more than four decades of collaboration between the two companies, particularly in France. Recent joint projects include the launch of a 20-megawatt biomass boiler in Toulouse last year and the construction of another 8-megawatt unit in Nantes. The new contract marks a significant expansion into Germany and Spain, reinforcing Engie’s goal of becoming a leading industrial decarbonisation partner in Europe.

Engie plans to increase the number of industrial sites it supports from 160 today to 250 by the end of the decade. Its roadmap includes the deployment of renewable energy systems, waste-to-energy technologies and heat recovery solutions.

Airbus’s efforts to decarbonise its operations are part of broader environmental targets for the aviation industry, which faces growing scrutiny over its carbon footprint. While the UAE and wider Arabian Gulf region are not part of this particular contract, Airbus’s shift to greener manufacturing could impact regional suppliers, particularly those involved in component manufacturing and MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul).

The aerospace manufacturer is a key partner to airlines and governments across the Middle East. Any operational changes to its European footprint may influence logistics, pricing and supply chain dynamics in the region.

As climate policies tighten worldwide, the aviation sector is expected to increase investment in sustainable fuel production, aircraft design innovation, and energy efficiency across production lines. Engie’s involvement in Airbus’s industrial transition is likely to be closely watched by other major manufacturers.

The collaboration between Airbus and Engie comes amid increasing pressure on industrial firms to align with national and EU-wide carbon neutrality targets. Both Airbus and Engie have stated that the long-term success of the partnership will depend on the practical implementation and scaling of these solutions in complex industrial environments.
