Dubai’s iconic Ramadan Iftar Cannon is set to play a new humanitarian role this year, as Dubai Police uses its daily broadcast to support the “Edge of Life” campaign aimed at rescuing five million children from hunger worldwide.
Launched by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the campaign seeks to raise at least AED1 billion to combat childhood hunger and provide sustainable food support to vulnerable communities.
Recognising major contributors
Throughout Ramadan, the Iftar Cannon segment, aired live on Dubai TV and Sama Dubai TV, will announce the name of one donor contributing AED1 million or more each day. The initiative aims to encourage wider community participation, inspiring individuals and institutions to step forward and contribute.
Lieutenant General Abdulla Khalifa Al Marri, Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police, said the campaign reflects the UAE’s long-standing culture of generosity and humanitarian action.
He noted that the Ramadan drive carries a powerful message aligned with the leadership’s vision to support the most vulnerable, particularly children at risk of malnutrition and hunger.
“Dubai Police is honoured to support this campaign, which reflects our community’s values and reinforces our role in advancing the UAE’s humanitarian efforts,” he said.
Focus on children in crisis zones
The campaign places special emphasis on children in the world’s most fragile regions, especially those affected by natural disasters and conflict. According to global statistics, five children under the age of five die every minute due to malnutrition and hunger.
Operating under the umbrella of Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives, the initiative aims to implement long-term, sustainable programmes that address childhood hunger at its roots.
It is being carried out in partnership with leading international humanitarian organisations, including UNICEF, Save the Children, Children’s Investment Fund Foundation, and Action Against Hunger.
