Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has reminded motorists to strictly follow school bus stop arm regulations, reinforcing that child safety on the roads is a shared responsibility.

In a public advisory, the authority stressed that drivers must stop when a school bus is picking up or dropping off students. The RTA said motorists should only move once all children have safely crossed the road, the stop arm is fully withdrawn, and the bus’s flashing lights are turned off.

Officials warned that failure to comply with these rules will result in fines, as part of ongoing efforts to improve road safety and protect students during daily commutes.

Rules for different road types

The RTA outlined specific instructions based on road layouts:

  • Divided roads (with a median or barrier): Vehicles travelling behind the bus must stop at least five metres away
  • Undivided roads (no median): Vehicles in both directions must stop at least five metres from the bus

The authority clarified that divided roads are separated by a physical barrier or median, while undivided roads allow traffic to flow in both directions without separation.

The reminder comes as part of wider initiatives to promote road discipline and ensure safer journeys for children across Dubai’s transport network.
