Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) has opened registration for its 20th Clean Energy Certificates (CECs) auction, giving organisations across the UAE another opportunity to verify their clean electricity consumption and strengthen their sustainability commitments. Registration will remain open until 31 July 2026.
Introduced under the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy’s Regulatory Policy for Clean Energy Certificates in 2021, the programme has become a key part of the emirate’s clean energy transition. Demand for CECs continues to grow across sectors including healthcare, manufacturing, retail, energy, real estate, commercial enterprises and events.
As the Single Registrant and Scheme Operator, EWEC manages and operates the CEC market while supporting businesses in demonstrating verified renewable energy usage.
The company said its expanding renewable energy portfolio is creating greater access to Clean Energy Certificates. EWEC expects its solar generation capacity to reach 17.5 gigawatts (GW) by 2030, with plans to exceed 30GW by 2035, significantly increasing the availability of certificates for organisations seeking verified clean energy credentials.
Mohamed Almarzooqi, Chief Assets Officer at EWEC, said the milestone reflects the growing demand for verified climate action across multiple industries.
“As EWEC continues to deliver world-leading renewable energy mega-projects, we are unlocking new opportunities for organisations to actively participate in the energy transition,” he said.
He added that the expansion of the company’s renewable energy portfolio allows EWEC to supply Clean Energy Certificates at an unprecedented scale while keeping access affordable for organisations of all sizes.
EWEC said it will continue offering competitive reserve prices for solar, nuclear and wind certificates to encourage wider participation. Pricing details for each certificate category are provided during the registration process.
Each Clean Energy Certificate represents the environmental attributes of 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) of renewable or clean electricity and complies with the internationally recognised International Renewable Energy Certificate (I-REC) Standard.
According to EWEC, CECs remain the only accredited mechanism in Abu Dhabi that enables organisations to officially verify electricity consumption from clean energy sources and demonstrate measurable progress towards sustainability and decarbonisation goals.
The auction will be conducted using a competitive “Pay as Bid” clearing mechanism, allowing participants to bid for their preferred clean energy allocation. Auction results are expected to be announced by 5 August 2026.
