The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) has announced that UAE nationals can now renew their Emirates ID cards up to one year before their expiry date, doubling the previous early renewal window of six months.

The new measure, effective from 14 July 2026, is part of the authority’s efforts to expand proactive digital government services and provide greater flexibility for citizens. The initiative is designed to help users complete important identity-related transactions earlier, making it easier to manage personal affairs through the UAE’s advanced digital services platform.

The move also builds on ICP’s earlier decision allowing UAE nationals to renew their passports one year before expiry. When both the passport and Emirates ID expire around the same time, citizens can now renew both documents through a single integrated process, reducing paperwork, saving time, and improving the overall customer experience.

Major General Suhail Saeed Al Khaili, Director General of ICP, said the extended renewal period reflects the UAE leadership’s vision of delivering proactive government services that respond to citizens’ needs. He said the change gives customers more flexibility to choose the most convenient time to complete their transactions while improving quality of life and customer satisfaction.

Al Khaili also highlighted the UAE’s global leadership in identity management, noting that the Emirates ID is recognised for its security, reliability, and its seamless integration with government and private sector services. He said the latest enhancement further strengthens the country’s position as a regional and international benchmark for digital identity services.

According to ICP, the initiative also supports the UAE’s Zero Government Bureaucracy Programme by simplifying procedures, reducing duplicate processes, strengthening service integration, and making greater use of artificial intelligence. The authority said the goal is to continue transforming public services from reactive transactions into fully integrated, proactive digital experiences.
