Dubai, UAE — August 2026 — DP World has completed a key phase of its $800 million investment programme to modernize Tartus port in Syria, delivering three mobile harbor cranes expected to boost cargo handling capacity by 40 percent.

According to the Emirates News Agency, the crane delivery marks the first phase of the port’s development programme under a 30-year concession agreement. The plan targets the creation of world-class logistics infrastructure, improved supply chain efficiency, job creation and long-term economic growth in Syria.

The new cranes are expected to speed up vessel handling, cut waiting times, raise operational efficiency and expand the port’s capacity to manage containers, bulk cargo and breakbulk shipments alike.

“This investment reflects our long-term commitment to supporting the recovery of the Syrian economy by rebuilding trade infrastructure, attracting investment and generating employment,” said Fahed Al Banna, chief executive officer of DP World in Tartus.

Mohammed Shehab, deputy group chief executive officer for Egypt and the Levant, underscored the strategic significance of Tartus port’s location as a gateway linking Syria to regional and global markets.

Upcoming phases of the programme include deepening the port’s waters, renovating quay walls, adding new cargo handling equipment and introducing digital technologies. The quay wall renovation is scheduled for completion by the end of 2027, a step expected to enable Tartus to accommodate larger vessels and cement its role as a primary gateway for Syrian trade.
