Zayed International Airport (AUH) in Abu Dhabi has received the Certified Autism Centre™ designation from the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES), highlighting Abu Dhabi Airports’ commitment to creating a more inclusive and accessible travel experience.
The certification follows a comprehensive onsite assessment and evidence-based training programme conducted in line with IBCCES’ international standards. The process reviewed passenger-facing areas, service procedures and operational touchpoints across the terminal, while equipping airport teams with the knowledge, language and confidence to assist autistic and sensory-sensitive travellers.
Jorg Oppermann, Chief Operating Officer of Abu Dhabi Airports, said the certification reflects the organisation’s commitment to ensuring that all passengers, including people with autism and their families, feel welcomed, supported and understood.
IBCCES CEO and Board Chairman Myron Pincomb said the designation demonstrates AUH’s leadership in supporting autistic and sensory-sensitive travellers through inclusive services and thoughtful design.
The airport offers several autism- and sensory-friendly facilities, including a dedicated sensory space with interactive features and calming lighting. Passengers can also use Hidden Disability Sunflower lanyards to discreetly request additional time or assistance during their journey.
Trained airport teams provide personalised and respectful support, helping improve passenger flow and reduce stress for travellers who require additional assistance. IBCCES provides autism, sensory and neurodiversity training and certification across sectors including travel, healthcare, education, public safety and business.
