Abu Dhabi has designated eight specialised centres to support the diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), marking a significant step in enhancing early detection and care services across the emirate in line with World Autism Awareness Day.
The initiative, led by the Department of Health (DoH), covers facilities in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Al Dhafra, aiming to ensure faster access to diagnosis and early intervention for children and their families within an integrated healthcare framework.
Faster access to diagnosis
Under the new system, all approved centres are required to provide an initial assessment within 14 days of receiving a referral or booking. Parents can book appointments directly or through referrals from schools, nurseries, healthcare providers, or programmes such as the “Well-Child” initiative.
Officials said the move is expected to significantly reduce waiting times while improving early identification of developmental conditions.
Integrated model of care
The centres will operate under a unified approach that connects healthcare, education and community services, ensuring continuous support for children throughout their care journey.
Fayeza Al Yafei, Executive Director of the Healthcare Quality Sector at DoH, said the initiative establishes a clear and consistent standard for autism diagnosis and care across the emirate. She noted that timely assessments help families better understand treatment pathways and improve long-term developmental outcomes.
Centres across Abu Dhabi, Al Ain
The designated centres are strategically located to enhance accessibility. In Abu Dhabi, facilities include the American Centre for Psychiatry and Neurology, Burjeel Medical City, NMC Mowj Child Development Centre, and Sakina for Children.
In Al Ain, centres include Burjeel Royal Hospital, the American Centre for Psychiatry and Neurology, and Sakina for Children.
Quality standards and evaluation
All centres were selected following a comprehensive evaluation process assessing governance, clinical capabilities, staffing, infrastructure, and community engagement.
They will operate in accordance with DoH’s ASD care standards, covering early screening, diagnosis, personalised care plans, and ongoing follow-up to ensure consistent quality across all facilities.
Supporting inclusion and families
Authorities highlighted that the initiative reinforces efforts to support People of Determination, improve early intervention outcomes, and strengthen inclusive healthcare services across the emirate.
The Department of Health said the move aligns with its broader vision to build a healthcare system focused on prevention, early support, and continuous care for all members of society.
