Aggreko To Power Formula E Events With Renewable Energy Assets

Both Entities Enter Multi-Year Partnership

Formula E has forged a multi-year partnership with Aggreko, a leading global energy solutions provider, to integrate cutting-edge sustainable technology into its events worldwide.

The collaboration underscores Formula E’s commitment to achieving its ambitious emissions reduction targets and solidifies its position as the world’s first net-zero carbon sport.

Under the agreement, Aggreko will deploy state-of-the-art renewable energy solutions such as biofuel generators, solar arrays, and advanced battery technology to power Formula E events.

The initiative aligns with Formula E’s goal to reduce emissions across Scopes 1, 2, and 3 by 45% by 2030, based on a Season 5 (2019) baseline, as validated by the Science Based Target initiative.

Simultaneous Charging

A vital component of the partnership involves the deployment of six 300kVA batteries by Aggreko to charge all Formula E cars simultaneously.

These batteries, alongside varying battery sizes to power the circuit infrastructure, exemplify Aggreko’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions. Notably, each battery can charge four race cars simultaneously, equivalent to powering 84,000 mobile phones.

In addition to battery technology, Aggreko will use Stage V Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO)- powered generators, which emit 90% less CO2 than diesel, thus significantly reducing environmental impact.

Moreover, selected tracks will leverage solar array trackside to supplement battery power, further enhancing the sustainability of Formula E events.

Given that most Formula E races are held on street tracks explicitly constructed for the event, Aggreko’s temporary energy solutions play a pivotal role in ensuring seamless race weekends.

Tailored Plans

Aggreko’s experts develop tailored plans for each race location, powering not only the cars but also Formula E’s hospitality areas, fan villages, and various energy points around the track.

David de Behr, Head of Sales at Aggreko Event Services, stressed the company’s commitment to sustainability: “Aggreko is aiding Formula E’s energy transition journey, supporting its goal to reduce overall emissions by 45% and maintain its position as the world’s most sustainable sport.”

Tiziana di Gioia, Formula E’s Chief Revenue Officer, added, “Aggreko is a trusted supplier and expert in forward-thinking and sustainable temporary energy solutions, so we’re thrilled to have it on board as an Official Provider of the championship.

“It is vital to us to have the correct power to deliver our unique events and to do so in the most sustainable methods possible, something that Aggreko is a true leader and pioneer in.”

The partnership between Formula E and Aggreko signifies a monumental step towards revolutionising sustainable energy solutions in the global events industry, setting a new standard for environmental responsibility and innovation.
