Cathay Cargo exchanges shipment information using IATA’s ONE Record data protocol

Becomes first carrier to do so
Cathay Cargo has made a significant stride in digitalising air cargo operations by becoming the first carrier to implement the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) ONE Record data protocol for exchanging shipment information with forwarders in its daily operations. This groundbreaking achievement comes one year ahead of IATA’s target for ONE Record implementation, set for January 2026.
In December 2024, three freight forwarders on the Chinese Mainland – Sinotrans Air Freight, WECAN International Freight Forwarding International Logistics, and ALL-LINK Logistics – began exchanging electronic air waybill (eAWB) and shipment status information with Cathay Cargo using a specialised application programme interface (API) designed to comply with ONE Record’s data protocols.
In January 2025, Sinotrans Hong Kong Air Transportation Development became the first Hong Kong-based forwarder to join the initiative. This allowed them to submit eAWB data and access shipment information from Cathay Cargo through the ONE Record protocol.
Tom Owen, Director of Cargo at Cathay, said: “These real-world use cases highlight Cathay Cargo’s ongoing commitment to leadership in the digitalisation of the air-cargo sector. Our successful integration with forwarders shows we are well-positioned to meet IATA’s ONE Record implementation target in 2026. The simplicity of aligning our customers’ systems with ONE Record protocols using APIs underscores the operational efficiencies, enhanced security, and improved transparency that come with this change.”
The ONE Record initiative by IATA aims to enhance transparency in the global air cargo industry by tracking shipments as they move through various stages, from shipper to agent, airline, warehouse, and customs authorities. The use of APIs ensures secure data exchanges, allowing all stakeholders to monitor the progress of consignments in real time.
In this new approach, Sinotrans uploaded its eAWB data through ONE Record using a digital interface developed by Cathay Cargo’s innovation partner, Global Logistics System (HK) Company Limited (GLS). GLS has been instrumental in developing other key digitalisation projects for Cathay Cargo, such as the carrier’s Click & Ship online booking platform.
ONE Record offers stakeholders far more data than the traditional Cargo Interchange Message Procedure (CIMP) standard, which only provides essential departure and arrival details. With ONE Record, multi-dimensional data such as temperature, geolocation, and real-time tracking of containers with temperature-sensitive shipments, such as Envirotainer’s Releye packaging, can be accessed.
Wen Xuan Zang, Director of Digitalisation at Sinotrans, noted: “We are thrilled to be the first cargo forwarder to partner with Cathay in implementing ONE Record. This innovative approach will transform our operations, providing greater efficiency and transparency throughout the cargo shipment. With Cathay Cargo, we are setting new industry standards and delivering enhanced service to our customers.”
IATA’s ONE Record aims to streamline the complex web of stakeholders involved in air cargo, including shippers, forwarders, airlines, ground handlers, and customs services. By making shipment data relevant and accessible to all, it ensures that each stakeholder can act on the information they need at any point during the transport process.
Henk Mulder, Head of Digital Cargo at IATA, noted: “For data to be beneficial, it must be viewed in the context of a complete shipment. IATA’s ONE Record provides an intelligent, decentralised data infrastructure where stakeholders can access relevant data securely and in real time, driving efficiencies across the transport and logistics sector. It is exciting to see this production-level example of communication between multiple cargo stakeholders.”
Tom Owen added, “At Cathay Cargo, we’re committed to enhancing transparency and connectivity within air cargo. We will continue to lead the way in offering API links to our customers and look forward to helping more of them connect directly with us using ONE Record protocols.”
