The Roads and Transport Authority has introduced advanced drone technology to inspect Dubai Metro tunnels, marking a major step forward in improving safety, efficiency, and infrastructure monitoring across the network.
The initiative, rolled out in collaboration with metro operator Keolis MHI, enables faster and more precise inspections while significantly reducing risks to maintenance teams. It also supports Dubai’s broader push toward smart and sustainable mobility solutions.
Inspection time cut by 60%
Dawood Alrais, Director of Rail Maintenance at RTA’s Rail Agency, said the use of drones has reduced inspection time by 60 percent while delivering safer and more accurate assessments of tunnel conditions.
“Areas that were previously difficult to access can now be inspected with ease,” Alrais said. “The drones provide a wider field of view and high-resolution imagery, allowing for more detailed analysis and better maintenance planning.”
He added that the technology limits human exposure to hazardous environments and enables the creation of digital inspection reports, improving decision-making and long-term asset management. The system also lays the groundwork for future use of artificial intelligence to analyse inspection data.
Towards a smarter transport system
Vikas Sardana, Acting Managing Director of Keolis MHI, said the project reflects a shared commitment to innovation and safety.
“We are proud to support RTA’s vision for a smarter, safer, and more efficient transport system,” he said. “Adopting advanced technologies enhances operational performance while protecting our teams and setting new standards for rail operations.”
The drone programme aligns with RTA’s 2024–2030 strategy and the UAE’s National Innovation Strategy, which focus on sustainability, digital transformation, and technological leadership. As Dubai continues to advance its smart mobility agenda, the initiative highlights the emirate’s forward-looking approach to urban transport and infrastructure excellence.
