Dubai: Rushing onto a Dubai Metro train and realising you are in the wrong cabin is a familiar moment for many commuters. While some mistakes are minor, ignoring Dubai Metro rules can result in fines starting from Dh100 and rising to Dh2,000 for serious safety breaches.

The Roads and Transport Authority enforces these regulations to maintain safety, order, and a smooth travel experience across the network. Passengers are advised to be aware of the rules before entering stations or boarding trains.

Awareness of Dubai Metro rules is essential for all passengers, as violations can result in fines ranging from Dh100 for minor offences to Dh2,000 for major safety breaches. By following these rules—covering areas such as ticketing, seating, prohibited items, and emergency protocols—commuters help maintain a safe, orderly, and efficient travel experience across the metro and tram network.

How Dubai Metro fines are classified

Fines are divided into categories based on the severity of the violation.

Minor offences: Dh100 fines

These cover common behaviours that disrupt other passengers or metro operations, including causing disturbances, sitting in reserved areas, eating or drinking in prohibited zones, bringing animals on board except guide dogs, entering restricted or non-passenger areas, placing feet on seats, misusing lifts or escalators, unsafe boarding practices, tampering with doors, or carrying items that pose inconvenience or risk.

Moderate offences: Dh200 fines

These mainly relate to fare and compliance issues. Examples include travelling without paying, entering fare zones without a valid ticket, failing to present a valid nol card, using expired or someone else’s card, unauthorised sale of nol cards, littering or spitting, smoking, selling or promoting goods without permission, ignoring inspectors’ instructions, violating posted signage, or distracting drivers.

A Dh300 fine is issued for sleeping in prohibited areas such as passenger shelters or restricted zones.

Major offences: Dh500 to Dh2,000 fines

Serious violations carry heavier penalties due to safety concerns. A Dh500 fine applies for carrying alcoholic beverages within public transport facilities or using counterfeit cards. Fines of Dh1,000 are imposed for carrying hazardous items like weapons or flammable materials, entering prohibited zones, or crossing metro tracks outside designated areas. The highest fine of Dh2,000 is reserved for misusing emergency buttons, abusing safety equipment, or interfering with tram operations in ways that endanger passengers.

Authorities remind commuters that following metro rules not only avoids fines but also helps keep Dubai’s public transport safe, efficient, and comfortable for everyone.
