Etihad Airways has announced a major expansion of its mainland China operations, unveiling five new destinations and adding 28 weekly flights in one of its largest single-market growth moves in recent years.
The expanded network will connect Zayed International Airport with key Chinese cities including Shanghai Pudong, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Hangzhou and Shenzhen. This brings Etihad’s total footprint in mainland China to 35 weekly flights across six destinations, alongside its existing daily service to Beijing Daxing.
All routes will be operated using the airline’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner fleet, offering a consistent widebody experience with both Business and Economy class cabins.
The move underscores the growing importance of the UAE–China corridor, strengthening links across trade, tourism and investment. It also reinforces Abu Dhabi’s role as a strategic global gateway connecting China with markets across the Middle East, Africa, Europe and North America.
The expansion is expected to significantly boost both passenger travel and cargo movement, improving access to China’s major commercial and industrial hubs. Enhanced cargo capacity will also support global supply chains and high-value trade flows.
Etihad confirmed that all new routes will operate under its joint venture with China Eastern Airlines, enabling better coordination and seamless connectivity across both networks. The Chinese carrier already operates routes linking multiple cities with the UAE.
Further strengthening logistics capabilities, the airline’s cargo partnership with SF Airlines will enhance freight connectivity across key trade corridors.
Chairman Mohamed Ali Al Shorafa said the expansion reflects the deepening ties between the UAE and China, highlighting the long-term economic value generated through enhanced connectivity.
Chief Executive Officer Antonoaldo Neves added that China remains a cornerstone of Etihad’s growth strategy, with the latest expansion aimed at meeting rising demand for travel, business and cargo while supporting Abu Dhabi’s broader economic ambitions.
Each newly added destination plays a strategic role: Shanghai as a global financial hub, Guangzhou as a manufacturing gateway, Chengdu as a growing innovation centre, Hangzhou as a digital economy leader, and Shenzhen as a global technology powerhouse.
The announcement marks a significant step in Etihad’s expansion strategy, offering travellers and businesses improved access between China and international markets through Abu Dhabi.
