Featuring plug-in hybrid performance
Ferrari has revealed its latest masterpiece, the 296 Speciale, a mid-rear-engine plug-in hybrid Berlinetta that redefines performance, control, and driving emotion. Positioned as the crown jewel in Ferrari’s production range, the 296 Speciale inherits a legacy that includes the Challenge Stradale, 430 Scuderia, 458 Speciale, and 488 Pista. Each icon set new standards in its time, and now, the 296 Speciale promises to do the same.
The 296 Speciale evolves the formidable 296 GTB platform into something even more remarkable. With a combined output of 880 horsepower, it becomes the most powerful rear-wheel-drive Ferrari Berlinetta ever produced. Ferrari focused on raw power and harnessing that power to create an intuitive, thrilling, and emotionally engaging driving experience.
Underpinning the 296 Speciale is Ferrari’s cutting-edge plug-in hybrid architecture. At its heart lies a 120° V6 twin-turbo engine with a high-performance electric motor. This configuration not only boosts performance but also improves agility and response. Thanks to its short wheelbase, advanced chassis tuning, and innovative dynamic control systems, the car delivers immediate feedback to driver inputs.
Ferrari engineers have extracted every ounce of performance from the V6 engine. Derived from the 296 Challenge racing model, the internal combustion unit now delivers 700 cv, 37 more than the standard 296 GTB. This leap in performance was made possible by employing titanium connecting rods, reinforced pistons, a lightened crankshaft, and F1-derived knock control systems. These elements contribute to an engine that sings with a unique exhaust note defined by harmonics of the 3rd, 6th and 9th combustion orders—now enhanced in pitch, clarity, and volume.
The electric motor has not been overlooked either. It now produces 180 cv in extra boost mode, allowing the powertrain to unleash seamless bursts of acceleration. This additional electric thrust is paired with an optimised eight-speed dual-clutch transmission that shortens gear changes and heightens driver connection, particularly under full load.
Ferrari’s obsession with aerodynamic efficiency is evident in the 296 Speciale. Drawing from developments on the 296 Challenge, the car produces 435 kg of downforce at 250 km/h, 20% more than the 296 GTB. Innovations like the front aero damper and newly sculpted vertical fins on the rear bumper work in concert with an active rear spoiler. The spoiler now benefits from a faster actuator system that transitions between aerodynamic modes in half the time, and a new Medium Downforce setting improves high-speed stability without sacrificing agility.
Beyond sheer performance, the 296 Speciale is also a triumph of lightweight engineering. Weight has been trimmed by 60 kg compared with the 296 GTB, thanks to carbon fibre in the bodyshell and titanium in the powertrain. The result is a class-leading weight-to-power ratio of just 1.60 kg per cv, underlining Ferrari’s relentless pursuit of driving purity.
Handling and control have been refined with meticulous tuning of the suspension and electronics. The car sits 5 mm lower than its sibling and features revised spring and damper settings. This translates to 13% less roll through corners, allowing the car to maintain composure at the edge of grip. Enhancing this is the latest evolution of Ferrari’s ABS Evo system, which provides superior braking accuracy and repeatability in all driving conditions.
The 296 Speciale is not just a faster or more powerful Ferrari. It represents the culmination of decades of motorsport-derived innovation, now translated into a road-going package for discerning drivers. This is a car created not for the showroom floor, but for those who live for every apex, every braking zone, and every hairpin.
Ferrari has once again raised the bar for what’s possible in a plug-in hybrid performance car. The 296 Speciale is a bold statement in Maranello’s future-facing engineering philosophy, where electric performance and petrol passion coexist in thrilling harmony.
