Mubadala Investment Company has strengthened its presence in European energy infrastructure with a $200 million investment in Greenlink, a subsea electricity interconnector linking Great Britain and Ireland.
The investment sees Mubadala acquire part of infrastructure investor Equitix’s stake in Greenlink, a joint venture between Equitix and Baltic Cable. The project operates a 504MW high-voltage electricity connection designed to enhance cross-border power transmission and support the growing integration of renewable energy sources.
Spanning approximately 190 kilometres beneath the sea between Ireland and Great Britain, Greenlink uses high-voltage direct current (HVDC) technology to efficiently transfer electricity over long distances. The interconnector has the capacity to supply power equivalent to around 380,000 homes.
Greenlink plays a key role in improving energy security, increasing grid flexibility and enabling electricity to flow between markets when demand and supply conditions change. The project also supports renewable energy deployment by helping balance power networks across borders.
Recognised by the European Union as a Project of Common Interest, Greenlink is considered a strategic asset that contributes to regional energy resilience and a more integrated European electricity market.
Karim El Jazzar, Head of Europe and MENA Infrastructure at Mubadala, said the investment aligns with the company’s strategy of backing high-quality infrastructure assets that support modern economies and more efficient energy systems. He noted that interconnectors are becoming increasingly important as power markets evolve and renewable energy capacity expands.
Achal Bhuwania, Chief Investment Officer at Equitix, welcomed the partnership, describing Greenlink as a critical infrastructure asset that enhances energy resilience, strengthens cross-border connectivity and supports the transition to a lower-carbon energy future.
The deal further expands Mubadala’s infrastructure portfolio and reflects its focus on investing in assets linked to long-term global trends, including energy transition and sustainable economic development.
