Nato jets scramble as Russia unleashes 500-missile attack on Ukraine

Ukraine intercepts 475 aerial threats

Russia launched a massive overnight aerial assault on Ukraine. At least 537 missiles and drones were fired at cities across the country. Ukrainian forces intercepted 475 aerial threats.

The Polish military says: “All available forces” are activated.

The Russian strike wave is one of the largest since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Cities hit include Kremenchuk, Zaporizhzhia, Mykolaiv, Donetsk, and Lviv. Industrial infrastructure across Ukraine has suffered significant damage.

The attack included: Tu-95 bombers, MiG jets, Kinzhal hypersonic missiles, Shahed drones, Iskander ballistic and cruise missiles.

Nato warplanes have scrambled in response. Poland confirmed its fighter jets were and remain airborne. Polish air defences are on full alert amid fears the attack can cross borders. Radar and defence systems are at their highest state of readiness.

A Ukrainian F-16 pilot, Lt-Col Maksym Ustimenko, died, fending off the Russian attack. He shot down seven Russian airborne targets before crashing while steering his aircraft away from Ukrainian civilians.
