Pit Boost to transform Formula E racing

In Season 11
The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship is poised to transform the race-day experience by introducing PIT Boost, a groundbreaking feature debuting at select races in Season 11. This innovative technology enhances race strategy, boosts unpredictability, and further engages fans, marking a major milestone in the series’ evolution.
Pit Boost introduces a 10% energy boost (3.85kWh) to race cars through a 30-second, 600kW rapid charge during pit stops. This feature, mandatory at select races, offers a substantial power increase compared to current consumer superchargers, delivering an exciting new strategic element to Formula E. The introduction of Pit Boost could dramatically influence race outcomes and tactics, allowing teams to optimise their energy strategy mid-race.
Pit Boost is expected to reshape how races are approached. Drivers and teams will now have to balance the advantage of an energy boost with the risk of losing track position during pit stops. The timing of each team’s Pit Boostdeployment will become a crucial decision, heightening the drama and intensity of each race.
The first race to feature Pit Boost will be the Jeddah E-Prix in Saudi Arabia, scheduled for 14-15 February 2025. This will mark a significant milestone in Formula E’s ongoing commitment to innovation.
Alberto Longo, Co-Founder and Chief Championship Officer of Formula E, said: “After extensive testing, we’re thrilled to present this revolutionary technology. Pit Boost will challenge teams and drivers to make high-stakes decisions under intense pressure, creating dramatic moments and showcasing our series’ commitment to innovation.”
Marek Nawarecki, Senior Circuit Sport Director at the FIA, echoed these sentiments, adding, “Pit Boost exemplifies our ongoing effort to push the boundaries of electric mobility. It is an important step in advancing race-to-road technology and adds a thrilling new element to the Formula E spectacle.”
Pit Boost underscores Formula E’s leadership in electric mobility, addressing one of the main challenges in EV adoption: charging speed. By showcasing rapid-charging EV technology, the feature demonstrates how the series continues to act as a platform for transferring innovations from the race track to everyday vehicles.
