Siemens Energy has secured a major contract to provide advanced gas and steam turbine technology for the 2.6-gigawatt Taweelah C Independent Power Producer (IPP) project in Abu Dhabi, strengthening the emirate’s energy infrastructure and supporting its long-term sustainability goals.
The project marks the third power plant at the Taweelah site to be equipped with Siemens Energy technology. Under the agreement, the company will supply three gas turbines, two steam turbines, five generators, and associated auxiliary systems for the combined-cycle power facility.
Once operational, the Taweelah C plant is expected to enhance grid reliability, provide greater operational flexibility, and support the integration of large-scale renewable energy sources into Abu Dhabi’s electricity network. The facility has also been designed to accommodate potential carbon capture and storage technologies in the future, aligning with the UAE’s target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
The development is being led by TAQA in partnership with an international consortium that includes Al Jomaih Energy and Water Company and Sembcorp Industries. Engineering, procurement, and construction responsibilities have been assigned to China Energy Engineering Group Corporation, while Emirates Water and Electricity Company will serve as the sole purchaser of the electricity generated by the plant.
Karim Amin, Member of the Executive Board of Siemens Energy, said the project highlights the growing importance of flexible and reliable gas-fired generation as global energy demand continues to rise.
He noted that the project will include the first HL-class gas turbine to be deployed in the UAE, offering industry-leading performance and efficiency. Amin added that the milestone reinforces Siemens Energy’s long-standing contribution to the UAE’s energy sector and its commitment to supporting the country’s economic and sustainability ambitions.
Manufacturing of the key components will take place across Siemens Energy’s global production network. The SGT5-9000HL gas turbines and SST5-5000 steam turbines will be produced in Germany, while the SGen5-3000W and SGen5-2000P generators will be manufactured at the company’s facility in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA.
