UAE National Orchestra launches Tashyeed to nurture Emirati musical talent

ABU DHABI, UAE — The UAE National Orchestra has unveiled Tashyeed, its first specialised programme dedicated to training Emirati orchestral musicians and cultivating a new generation of home-grown musical talent across the UAE.

Launched in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday, the 13-month part-time initiative will support 17 Emirati musicians through a combination of mentorship, rehearsal participation and specialist workshops conducted within a professional orchestral environment.

The name Tashyeed is derived from the Arabic word “تشييد,” meaning “to build” or “to elevate,” reflecting the orchestra’s vision of strengthening the UAE’s cultural and artistic landscape while preparing future Emirati performers for professional orchestral careers.

Sheikha Alia bint Khalid Al Qassimi, Managing Director of the UAE National Orchestra, said creating opportunities for Emirati musicians remains central to the organisation’s long-term vision.

She explained that the programme allows participants to develop within a real orchestral setting while gaining firsthand insight into the discipline and standards required at a professional level. She added that the initiative would contribute to both the growth of the orchestra and the future of music in the UAE through local talent development.

Unlike conventional music training programmes, Tashyeed places musicians directly into rehearsal and performance environments, offering practical exposure to professional orchestral life.

The selected cohort includes musicians from different age groups and artistic backgrounds, performing instruments such as the oud, qanun, strings and percussion. The programme blends elements of Arabic musical heritage with Western orchestral traditions.

Structured across three progressive semesters, the initiative includes weekly sessions focused on individual instruction, ensemble collaboration and rehearsal integration.

Dr Mahmoud Said, Learning Programs Lead at the orchestra, said the programme was designed to combine technical training with practical experience in professional performance environments.

He noted that the initiative helps musicians develop the discipline, adaptability and awareness needed to succeed at a professional orchestral level.

Tashyeed also serves as the first pillar of the orchestra’s broader education and community strategy, which is expected to expand in the future to include school outreach programmes, composer development projects and international artistic collaborations.

Participant Nada Alaydaroos described the programme as a valuable opportunity for Emirati musicians to strengthen their artistic and professional skills while supporting the continued growth of orchestral music in the UAE.

The programme will conclude with a graduation concert presented in collaboration with the UAE National Orchestra.
