US warships intercept Iranian missiles

Aimed at Israel amid rising tensions

American naval forces in the eastern Mediterranean intercepted multiple Iranian missiles aimed at Israel this week, according to US defence officials. The interceptions occurred as part of ongoing regional military activity following a surge in hostilities between Iran and Israel.

The US Navy deployed Aegis-equipped destroyers to the region earlier this year, anticipating potential escalation. Officials confirmed that these vessels successfully neutralised missiles launched by Iranian forces, preventing them from reaching Israeli territory. No casualties or damage have been reported from the attempted strikes.

Tensions have intensified since June 13, when Iran and Israel exchanged a series of retaliatory attacks. The most recent strikes have prompted heightened alerts across the Middle East, with neighbouring states closely monitoring developments.

Emergency services in Israel have reported fatalities following separate missile attacks, though it is unclear whether those casualties are linked to the intercepted projectiles. The Israeli Defence Forces have urged civilians to avoid areas near military sites, citing ongoing threats from long-range weapons systems.

The US has stated its military presence is intended to deter further escalation and defend its allies in the region. Iran has not officially commented on the reported interceptions, but its leadership has repeatedly warned against foreign involvement in the conflict.

Nations in the region have expressed concern about the growing risk of regional destabilisation. Analysts warn that the continued exchange of fire between Iran and Israel could drag in more regional actors if not contained.

While the US has reaffirmed its commitment to Israel’s defence, it has also urged all sides to show restraint. The situation remains fluid, with military analysts warning of the potential for a wider conflict if diplomatic solutions are not pursued.

Although the US has not begun deploying substantial military assets to the region following the most recent outbreak between Israel and Iran, the presence of a small flotilla of US warships in the region underscores Washington’s strategic interest in containing the ongoing crisis and preventing it from spilling over into neighbouring states. Efforts by regional mediators to de-escalate the situation have so far failed to produce concrete outcomes.

UK deploys fighter jets

UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has meanwhile confirmed that additional RAF fighter jets are being deployed to the Middle East in response to escalating conflict between Israel and Iran.

He explained that the deployment is intended as “contingency support across the region” and emphasised that the UK’s core message remains focused on de-escalation.

Speaking ahead of the G7 summit in Canada, Starmer described the situation as rapidly evolving and noted that ongoing coordination with international allies is underway. He reiterated that the UK has previously sent jets to the region, including last year, to help manage tensions and deter further escalation.

“We’ve already been repositioning assets, including jets, to the region,” he said. “All of our efforts and discussions are aimed at de-escalation.”
