Zayed National Museum opens in Abu Dhabi in December 2025

Highlighting 300,000 years of UAE history

The Zayed National Museum, the future national museum of the United Arab Emirates, is scheduled to open to the public in December 2025, according to the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi.

Situated in the Saadiyat Cultural District in the UAE capital, the museum will present a comprehensive narrative of the UAE’s history, from ancient civilisations to the modern federation.

The project is named after Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the UAE’s founding president, and aims to reflect his emphasis on education, heritage and national identity. The museum will feature six permanent galleries and one temporary exhibition space, covering nearly 300,000 years of human history in the region.

The museum’s collection includes archaeological artefacts from across the UAE, ranging from the Palaeolithic and Neolithic periods to the Bronze and Iron Ages. Many of these items were discovered during decades of excavations and research efforts launched under the leadership of Sheikh Zayed, including evidence of early irrigation systems and ancient copper mining.

Among the notable objects to be displayed is the Abu Dhabi Pearl, considered one of the world’s oldest natural pearls. It will also house the Blue Qur’an, a rare Islamic manuscript, and a replica of a traditional Magan boat created in collaboration with local and international universities.

The Zayed National Museum is designed by British architect Norman Foster and his firm Foster + Partners. The building features five curved steel structures that resemble falcon wings, referencing falconry —a long-standing tradition in Emirati culture. The design also prioritises sustainable building methods, in line with broader efforts in the region to reduce environmental impact.

The opening of the museum comes amid broader cultural development in Abu Dhabi. The Saadiyat Cultural District is home to major institutions, including the Louvre Abu Dhabi. It will soon feature the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, and teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi. Officials say the district is intended to position the UAE as a global hub for arts, science and culture.

While the museum highlights the story of the UAE, it will also explore wider regional and international connections. Officials say the institution aims to foster dialogue between cultures, promote understanding, and support academic research. It is expected to engage various groups, including students, researchers, visitors with disabilities, and senior citizens, through education programmes and accessible exhibitions.

In a statement, Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, described the museum as a continuation of the country’s decades-long investment in cultural infrastructure. He stated that the museum would play a crucial role in preserving national heritage while contributing to global discussions on identity, history, and knowledge sharing.

Sheikh Zayed’s role in initiating the country’s first museum in Al Ain in 1971 and the establishment of the Cultural Foundation in 1981 laid the groundwork for such institutions. The Zayed National Museum is seen as a continuation of this legacy, aiming to connect citizens, residents and international visitors with the country’s evolving story.

Once operational, the museum is expected to support academic collaborations and long-term archaeological research, strengthening the UAE’s position in global cultural heritage efforts. It will also showcase items on loan from both domestic and international collections, underlining its intention to be a centre for cross-border cooperation and cultural exchange.

The museum’s location on Saadiyat Island, just off the coast of the UAE capital, places it within a rapidly growing cultural district designed to attract both local audiences and regional and international tourists. With several major institutions already open or under development, the area is set to become one of the most densely concentrated zones of cultural activity in the Middle East.

Authorities hope the opening of Zayed National Museum will signal a new chapter in the UAE’s approach to culture, heritage, and global engagement.
