THEO POURCHAIRE SEALS FORMULA TWO TITLE AT YAS MARINA CIRCUIT
Theo Pourchaire could not beat Frederik Vesti in Sunday’s Formula 2 Feature race but was still celebrating after being crowned world champion following his fifth-place finish at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix weekend.
Pourchaire went into the season-finale at Yas Marina with a 16-point advantage following Vesti’s triumph in Saturday’s Sprint race and although the latter produced a solid drive to finish third, ART Grand Prix’s Pourchaire did enough to finish the race in P5 and ultimately seal the world title.
The victory meant he finished 11 points ahead of Vesti. Speaking after his victory, the 20-year-old French driver was emotional. He said: “It’s very special to win the title. The Formula 3 Championship title race in 2020 really broke my heart when I finished three points behind Oscar Piastri, who is now racing well in Formula 1 but this season was so good especially as I am now the Formula 2 World Champion.”
Sunday’s race was won by Jack Doohan with Pourchaire’s team-mate Victor Martins3.874 seconds behind and Vesti in third – 22.485 seconds adrift.
