Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi Pays Timeless Tribute to Umm Kulthum with a Powerful Evening of Music and Art

Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi (SUAD) paid tribute to the legendary Umm Kulthum with a powerful evening of music, art, and cultural reflection. The special concert featured renowned Belgian-Tunisian artist Ghalia Benali, who delivered stirring performances of Umm Kulthum’s iconic songs at the university’s Zayed Theatre on Wednesday, April 16th, accompanied by Moufadhel Adhoum on oud, Khaled Abouhegaze on drums, and Vincent Noiret on the cello. The performance drew over 400 attendees, including students, faculty, cultural figures, and members of the Abu Dhabi community. Notably, the event was graced by the presence of Her Excellency Noura Al Kaabi, Minister of State at the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Sheikha Alia bint Khalid Al Qassimi, Managing Director of the UAE National Orchestra.

Held under the patronage of Nadine Kaaki Al Nowais and sponsored by Abu Dhabi Mall, the event marked the 50th anniversary of Umm Kulthum’s passing and formed part of SUAD’s wider initiative honouring female pioneers under the theme ‘For ALL Women and Girls: Rights, Equality, and Empowerment’.

As part of the tribute, SUAD officially renamed its iconic Oval Room in honour of Umm Kulthum, designating it as Umm Kulthum Hall, recognising her lasting influence as a cultural and artistic icon.

Earlier in the week, a special painting activity invited students and guests to artistically interpret the spirit of Umm Kulthum’s music – adding an interactive and creative layer to the celebration.
