Sharjah introduces new dedicated lanes for motorcycles, buses, and trucks from November 1

The General Command of Sharjah Police, in collaboration with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), has announced a major traffic regulation set to take effect on November 1, introducing dedicated lanes for motorcycles, delivery bikes, heavy vehicles, and buses across key and secondary roads in the emirate.

The initiative forms part of Sharjah’s ongoing efforts to improve road safety, reduce congestion, and ensure orderly traffic flow through the use of clearly defined lanes and smart monitoring systems.

New lane designations

Under the new arrangement:

  • The far-right lane will be reserved exclusively for heavy vehicles and buses.
  • On four-lane roads, motorcycles may use the third and fourth lanes from the right.
  • On three-lane roads, motorcycles can travel in the middle or right lane, as per approved traffic rules.
  • On two-lane roads, motorcycles are restricted to the right lane only.

Smart monitoring and enforcement

Sharjah Police confirmed that compliance with these new lane rules will be monitored 24/7 using smart radars, advanced surveillance cameras, and dedicated traffic patrols positioned throughout the emirate. These technologies will help detect violations and ensure adherence to lane assignments and safety protocols.

Violators will face penalties under the Federal Traffic Law.

  • Article 8 stipulates a Dh1,500 fine and 12 black points for heavy vehicle drivers who fail to stay in their designated lanes.
  • Article 70 imposes a Dh500 fine for ignoring official traffic signs or instructions.

Promoting a culture of safety

Sharjah Police urged all motorists, riders, and delivery drivers to abide by the new rules and respect the designated lanes assigned to each vehicle category. Authorities emphasized that the move supports the emirate’s broader mission to foster a culture of road discipline and safety, while enhancing mobility efficiency and overall quality of life for residents. The department reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining safe and sustainable transport systems, aligned with Sharjah’s vision of becoming a model city for organized and responsible driving behavior.
