Abu Dhabi launches AI-powered system to detect illegal waste dumping

Abu Dhabi has rolled out a new artificial intelligence pilot designed to identify illegal waste dumping using satellite imagery, marking a major step forward in environmental monitoring and smart governance.

The initiative, launched by the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), aims to strengthen waste management, improve oversight, and support faster enforcement by shifting from manual inspections to data-driven detection.

UAE’s first AI-led waste monitoring initiative

The project is the first of its kind in the UAE to integrate AI models with satellite analysis for waste management. The system automatically scans images to detect dumping sites, assess risk patterns, and flag potential violations, reducing reliance on time-intensive field inspections.

Dr Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of EAD, said the initiative reflects Abu Dhabi’s commitment to sustainability and digital innovation. She noted that the project supports national priorities under the UAE Artificial Intelligence Strategy 2031 and the Abu Dhabi Environmental Centennial 2071.

Faster detection and stronger enforcement

The pilot was tested in the Al Buqairiyah area of Al Ain, where it achieved more than 90 percent accuracy. The AI system identified 150 illegal dumping locations, compared to 43 detected through conventional inspection methods.

Beyond detection, the technology tracks waste types, monitors changes in site size, and measures how long dumping activity persists. This allows authorities to respond more quickly, prioritise clean-up efforts, and prevent repeat violations.

Faisal Al Hammadi, Executive Director of EAD’s Environmental Quality Sector, said the system enhances coordination with partner entities, enabling faster removal of waste and supporting long-term environmental protection.

Expansion planned across the emirate

Following the success of the pilot phase, EAD plans to scale the project across Abu Dhabi through a centralised, AI-powered environmental monitoring platform. The move aligns with the emirate’s wider digital transformation agenda, including the TAM 4.0 platform and the 2025–2027 Digital Strategy, which aims to position Abu Dhabi as the world’s first AI-native government.

The expanded system is expected to play a key role in protecting natural habitats, improving compliance, and reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s leadership in smart, sustainable environmental management.
