The Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative has launched Water Pioneers, a national youth programme designed to equip young Emiratis with the knowledge, skills and leadership capabilities needed to help tackle growing global water scarcity challenges.

The programme aims to build a network of Emirati talent capable of contributing to national and international efforts to develop sustainable water solutions, while strengthening youth participation in shaping the future of the water sector.

The initiative forms part of the Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative’s broader commitment to investing in human capital and empowering young Emiratis through learning, capacity building, knowledge exchange and participation in discussions around water security.

Applications are now open for the first cohort, which will include 15 Emirati participants aged between 18 and 35. Candidates will be selected from a range of academic disciplines and professional sectors to encourage diverse perspectives, multidisciplinary collaboration and innovation.

The programme comes amid increasing pressure on global water resources, driven by rising demand and the effects of climate change. Global demand for sustainable water supplies is projected to exceed available resources by as much as 40 percent by 2030.

Around 2.2 billion people worldwide still lack access to safely managed drinking water, while 3.5 billion people do not have access to safe sanitation. In addition, approximately 4 billion people experience severe water scarcity for at least one month every year.

Ayesha Al Ateeqi, Chief Executive Officer of the Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative, said the launch reflects a long-term commitment to developing Emirati talent capable of contributing to a more sustainable water future.

“Launching the ‘Water Pioneers’ youth programme reflects a long-term commitment to building a generation of Emiratis who possess the knowledge, vision, and ability to help shape a more sustainable water future,” she said.

Al Ateeqi said water scarcity extends beyond environmental concerns and represents a strategic challenge that can affect communities, economic development and long-term stability.

She added that young leaders can play an important role in transforming awareness of water-related challenges into practical solutions through creativity, collaboration and innovation.

According to the Initiative, empowering young people to participate in climate and sustainability discussions can also strengthen community resilience and encourage greater international cooperation.

The Water Pioneers programme will provide participants with opportunities to expand their understanding of water-related issues, strengthen their professional capabilities and engage with national and global discussions on water security.

It also builds on the UAE’s long-standing focus on investing in young people and preparing future leaders to contribute to national priorities and international sustainability efforts.

Applications for the Water Pioneers Youth Programme are open until 7 October 2026 through the Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative’s official youth programme application platform.
