Dubai Deploys AI-Powered Rescue Robots and Drones to Strengthen Beach Safety

Dubai Municipality has launched an advanced AI-powered beach safety system that combines aquatic rescue robots with aerial water-rescue drones, marking a major step forward in smart coastal safety across the emirate.

The initiative introduces a technology-driven approach designed to improve rescue response times, enhance public safety, and support lifeguard operations across Dubai’s busy public beaches.

AI-enabled rescue system introduced

At the heart of the system is an aquatic rescue robot — the first device of its kind deployed in the Middle East. The remote-controlled rescue unit can travel up to five times faster than a lifeguard swimming to a distressed swimmer.

The robot has an operational range of up to one kilometre within line of sight and can tow loads of up to 500 kilograms. Built to operate in difficult sea conditions, the device enables lifeguards to reach swimmers in distress more quickly while reducing physical risk during the initial rescue phase.

Water-rescue drones enhance response

Supporting the aquatic robot is a water-rescue drone used for aerial monitoring and emergency assistance.

Often described as a “flying lifebuoy,” the drone can rapidly reach individuals in distress, land on the water surface, and provide immediate buoyancy support. Equipped with a live-feed camera, it allows lifeguards to monitor incidents in real time and coordinate rescue operations more effectively.

The drone’s aerial view also helps teams assess risks quickly and deploy additional resources where needed.

Integrated smart safety framework

Both technologies operate as part of a broader safety network that includes trained lifeguards, continuous monitoring systems, and centralised control platforms.

The combination of aerial and aquatic rescue tools enables faster intervention across Dubai’s extensive coastline, particularly during complex or time-sensitive emergencies.

Innovation driving safer public spaces

Bader Anwahi, CEO of the Public Facilities Agency at Dubai Municipality, said the deployment reflects the emirate’s commitment to adopting smart technologies to improve public safety.

He noted that integrating rescue robots and drones strengthens lifeguard capabilities while reducing risks faced by frontline responders.

Authorities say the system also supports Dubai’s wider vision of using innovation and artificial intelligence to enhance quality of life and create safer public environments.

Coverage across Dubai’s public beaches

Dubai Municipality oversees safety operations across the emirate’s public beaches and canals, including destinations such as Umm Suqeim Night Beach, Jumeirah Beach, and Al Mamzar Beach Park.

These beaches are supported by lifeguard teams, advanced rescue equipment, and continuous monitoring systems aimed at ensuring a safe and enjoyable coastal environment for residents and visitors.

Dubai officials say the adoption of AI-enabled rescue technologies positions the city among global leaders in smart beach safety while strengthening preparedness across its popular coastal destinations.
