Bids to become the world’s first electric carrier
Ecojet Airlines, a UK-based airline founded in 2021 as Fresh Airlines Limited, is aiming to transform the aviation industry with its commitment to sustainability and innovation.
Headquartered in Edinburgh, Scotland, Ecojet seeks to become the world’s first all-electric airline, focusing on reducing carbon emissions and promoting eco-friendly practices across its operations.
The airline’s journey towards sustainable aviation began with the appointment of Dale Vince, founder of green energy company Ecotricity, as a director in 2023. Under his leadership, Ecojet has assembled a team of experienced professionals, including CEO Brent Smith, a former Flybe pilot, and Peter Davies, former CEO of Brussels Airlines and Air Malta, who serves as chairman. This strong leadership team is driving Ecojet’s mission to transform air travel into a more environmentally responsible industry.
In November 2023, the airline signed an agreement to acquire 70 hydrogen-electric powertrains from ZeroAvia, a company developing zero-emission engines for commercial aviation. These powertrains are intended for use in Ecojet’s ATR72-600 aircraft, with the first retrofitted aircraft expected to enter service in 2026. Additionally, Ecojet has signed a Letter of Intent to acquire up to 50 Linx P9 aircraft from ARC Aerosystems, further expanding its fleet of sustainable aviation.
Ecojet had initially planned to begin commercial services in late 2024 using conventionally powered aircraft, with routes centred around Edinburgh. The strategy was to launch operations with kerosene-fuelled planes to establish its network and infrastructure before transitioning to greener alternatives.
Once certified, the airline plans to retrofit these aircraft with hydrogen-electric engines, marking a significant step toward reducing emissions. This phased approach enables Ecojet to commence operations without delay while steadily progressing towards its long-term goal of sustainable, zero-emission aviation.
Beyond its fleet, Ecojet is implementing sustainable practices throughout its operations. The airline plans to eliminate single-use plastics from its services, serve plant-based meals, and provide crew with sustainable uniforms. These initiatives align with Ecojet’s core values of environmental sustainability, people, innovation, and airmanship.
Ecojet’s commitment to innovation extends to its digital infrastructure and ground operations. The airline is investing in advanced digital systems to optimise flight scheduling and maintenance, enhancing operational efficiency. Additionally, Ecojet aims to electrify its ground support equipment, thereby reducing emissions and contributing to a quieter, more environmentally friendly airport experience.
As Ecojet prepares for its launch, the airline is seeking partners who share its vision of sustainable aviation. By collaborating with like-minded organisations, Ecojet aims to build a sustainable business and shape the future of aviation.
