The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) has detailed its key regulatory achievements in nuclear safety, security, radiation protection and non-proliferation in its 2025 Annual Report.
The report outlines FANR’s activities during the year, including regulatory inspections, emergency preparedness exercises, research projects and cooperation with national and international partners. It also highlights initiatives supporting the “We the UAE 2031” vision by improving regulatory efficiency and promoting the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
Among the major projects launched in 2025 was the Unifying Import and Export Systems platform. The digital system was introduced to streamline the movement of nuclear and radiological materials while maintaining effective regulatory oversight.
FANR also introduced the Nuclear and Radiation Excellence Award to recognise individuals and organisations making significant contributions to the development of the UAE’s nuclear and radiation sector.
During the year, the authority conducted 36 inspections at the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant to assess the operator’s compliance with regulatory requirements covering safety, security and non-proliferation.
More than 800 additional inspections were carried out at medical, industrial and other licensed facilities. These inspections focused on ensuring the safe handling, use and transportation of radioactive materials while protecting workers, the public and the environment.
FANR also verified that nuclear materials within the UAE continued to be used exclusively for peaceful purposes.
To strengthen emergency preparedness, the authority conducted or participated in 15 national and international exercises and drills. These activities involved UAE stakeholders and international organisations, including the International Atomic Energy Agency.
FANR hosted the eighth International Symposium on the System of Radiological Protection during 2025. The event attracted more than 600 international experts who discussed developments in radiation protection, advanced medical applications, artificial intelligence and environmental protection.
The authority also participated in 10 national and international research projects with organisations including the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Nuclear Energy Agency.
The projects examined ways to improve nuclear reactor safety and apply emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence and human-factor analysis, to regulatory practices.
FANR said the achievements reflect its commitment to protecting people and the environment while supporting the safe, secure and peaceful use of nuclear energy and radioactive materials across the UAE.
