Lockheed Martin to upgrade Poland’s F-16 fighter jets

As Nato expands defence capabilities

Poland has signed a Letter of Offer and Acceptance with the United States to modernise its fleet of 48 F-16 Block 52+ fighter jets to the F-16V configuration. The deal is part of Warsaw’s broader efforts to boost its military capabilities amid heightened security concerns in Europe following Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.

The upgrade contract, confirmed on August 14, 2025, will be carried out by US defence contractor Lockheed Martin.

The agreement includes a significant package of enhancements, including advanced radar systems, updated cockpit displays, and new electronic warfare features. The aim is to align the aircraft with fifth-generation fighter standards and ensure interoperability with Nato systems.

The upgraded jets will receive the APG-83 AESA radar, offering enhanced target detection and tracking. Other improvements include a high-resolution centre pedestal display, an upgraded mission computer, and new helmet-mounted systems. Structural modifications will extend each aircraft’s operational life to 12,000 flight hours. Additional upgrades involve targeting pods, digital interfaces, and collision avoidance systems.

Lockheed Martin will partner with Wojskowe Zakłady Lotnicze No. 2 (WZL-2), a Polish aerospace facility, to carry out the upgrade work domestically. The move is expected to strengthen Poland’s defence industrial base, support local employment, and contribute to long-term military readiness.

The modernisation forms part of Poland’s national defence strategy, which has seen rising investment in military hardware and infrastructure since Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Poland’s defence budget is set to exceed 4% of GDP in 2025, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), making it one of the highest in NATO.

Nato officials have repeatedly stressed the importance of enhanced interoperability among member states. With tensions along the alliance’s eastern flank, following Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, modernising older aircraft to match newer platforms like the F-35 is seen as critical to maintaining operational effectiveness.

For the Middle East and Africa region, the development reflects a broader trend of US allies investing in air force modernisation as part of broader defence reforms. Several Gulf countries, including the UAE, have also pursued upgrades to legacy platforms while integrating newer fifth-generation systems.

In North Africa, countries such as Morocco and Egypt continue to expand their fighter jet fleets, including F-16 variants, amid evolving regional security challenges.

Lockheed Martin has said the programme aligns with its existing 20-year cooperation with the Polish Air Force. Over the past decade, the company has invested $1.8 billion in Poland’s defence sector. While the figure has not been independently verified, the investment is said to include industrial partnerships and supply chain expansion.

The Polish Ministry of National Defence has not disclosed the full value of the modernisation contract. However, similar upgrades in other countries have cost hundreds of millions of dollars, depending on scope and local integration requirements.

As Nato repositions itself to counter new threats, especially along its eastern border, Poland’s move to modernise its air fleet may serve as a reference point for other regional and global partners weighing similar investments.Top of Form
