Dubai, UAE — January 2026 — The UAE aviation sector has reinforced its role as a strategic pillar of the national economy, contributing up to 18 percent of GDP and serving as a global benchmark.

A series of major achievements throughout 2025 have strengthened its support for trade, tourism, and logistics while advancing sustainability and innovation on the world stage.

According to the Emirates News Agency, key regulatory and infrastructural milestones included the January launch of a unified national platform for unmanned aerial vehicles by the General Civil Aviation Authority to enhance safety and investment.

In April, the GCAA granted Design Acceptance for the nation’s first hybrid Heliport at Abu Dhabi Cruise Terminal, a transformative step for the Abu Dhabi Air Taxi project and integrated urban air mobility.

Environmental leadership remained a cornerstone, with the GCAA submitting the UAE’s third State Action Plan to Reduce Aviation Emissions to the International Civil Aviation Organisation.

The comprehensive plan, developed with national stakeholders, includes 55 projects focused on operations, technology, and sustainable aviation fuels, aligning with the UAE’s global climate commitments.

The UAE’s international influence expanded significantly, winning a seat on the ICAO Council for a seventh consecutive term. The nation also secured key leadership roles, with Hamad Salem Al Muhairi re-elected as Chairperson of the ICAO Aviation Security Panel and Engineer Maryam AlBalooshi elected as the first Middle Eastern Chair of ICAO’s Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection.

As a global hub for aviation dialogue, the UAE successfully hosted the ICAO Global Implementation Support Symposium and the inaugural “Global Sustainable Aviation Market” in Abu Dhabi.

The GSAM initiative, now officially adopted as an annual ICAO event, aims to accelerate the global adoption of sustainable aviation fuels and climate finance solutions.

Complementing these strategic advances, UAE airports reported record passenger traffic, handling approximately 108.59 million passengers across Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Sharjah airports in the first nine months of 2025, underscoring the sector’s robust growth and operational excellence.
