UAE reviews Dh6 billion highway and mass transit plans linking Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman

Dubai: The UAE Infrastructure and Housing Council has reviewed a series of major transport projects, including a Dh6 billion federal highway and new mass transit proposals, aimed at improving connectivity between Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman.

The discussions took place during the council’s first meeting of 2026, chaired by Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, with participation from senior officials including Mattar Al Tayer, Director General of Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

Key focus areas included strengthening infrastructure readiness, easing traffic congestion and supporting long-term urban growth across the UAE.

Among the أبرز projects reviewed was the Fourth Federal Highway, a major road development scheme designed to boost inter-emirate connectivity and increase road capacity. The proposed highway will span approximately 68 kilometres and include 10 major interchanges, four flyovers, and between six to eight lanes in each direction.

Alongside road expansion, the council examined plans for an integrated mass transit network linking Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman. The proposed system will feature 10 main routes supported by bus rapid transit (BRT) services and dedicated lanes, connecting key hubs such as metro stations and city centres to better serve rising commuter demand.

Officials also reviewed federal policy studies focused on managing vehicle growth, as well as measures implemented to maintain traffic flow and safety during recent adverse weather conditions. Lessons from heavy rainfall events will be used to enhance future preparedness and response strategies.

The council emphasised the importance of accelerating high-impact transport projects and expanding sustainable mobility solutions to reduce reliance on private vehicles, cut congestion and improve accessibility between residential and business districts.

Al Mazrouei highlighted that infrastructure development remains central to the UAE’s long-term growth strategy, supporting national competitiveness, quality of life and sustainable resource management.

He added that upcoming phases will prioritise smart and sustainable mobility systems capable of accommodating population growth while reducing traffic congestion and environmental impact.

The meeting also addressed plans to strengthen Ajman’s connectivity through the third and fourth federal road corridors, reinforcing efforts to improve the movement of people and goods across the emirates.
