Spain beats Argentina to win World Cup, claims $51m prize

Spain has been crowned 2026 World Cup champions for the second time in its history, defeating Argentina 1-0 in the final to claim the winner’s prize of $51 million.

Runners-up Argentina take home $34 million.

The match ended goalless after regulation time before Ferran Torres struck the winning goal in the 106th minute of extra time, sealing Spain’s second world title following their first in 2010.

The tournament, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, featured 48 teams for the first time and distributed a record total of $871 million in prize money.

Record prize pool

FIFA’s $871 million total includes more than $100 million added last April in response to requests from several European federations for support covering travel and accommodation costs tied to a competition spread across three countries.

Each of the 48 participating teams received at least $12.5 million, comprising $10 million for qualifying and playing in the group stage, plus $2.5 million for pre-tournament training and expenses.

Bronze medalists England received $30 million, while fourth-placed France earned $28 million. Quarter-finalists each received $20 million, round-of-16 teams $16 million, and round-of-32 teams $12 million.
