The Sharjah Private Education Authority (SPEA) has introduced an ethical framework governing the use of artificial intelligence in educational institutions across the emirate, aimed at ensuring AI is used safely, responsibly and effectively.

The framework is designed to strengthen the quality of education, support digital transformation and help teachers and students benefit from AI technologies while protecting privacy, personal data and academic integrity.

Aligned with the UAE’s national priorities and values, the framework focuses on key principles including fairness, transparency, accountability, human oversight, cybersecurity, critical thinking and the verification of AI-generated content.

Aisha Butti Al Ghafli, Director of the Curriculum and Assessment Department at SPEA, said the initiative reflects the authority’s commitment to adopting modern technologies in education while protecting student data and maintaining the central role of teachers.

She added that the framework also seeks to strengthen students’ critical thinking abilities and encourage the responsible use of emerging technologies.

The initiative is intended to support adaptive learning, encourage innovation and improve teachers’ ability to use AI tools effectively. It also aims to equip students with skills needed for the future while promoting awareness of data protection and ethical AI practices.

SPEA said the framework provides practical guidance for educational institutions across Sharjah, taking into consideration different curricula and learning environments.

It also outlines the responsibilities of school leaders, teachers, students, IT teams, educational specialists and parents in ensuring AI is used appropriately.

The guidelines address academic integrity by setting standards for the use of AI in assignments, projects and assessments. Students may be required to disclose the use of AI where appropriate, while AI-generated content should not replace original student work or the professional role of teachers.

Schools are also expected to verify information produced by AI tools and check the reliability of associated sources before using such content for educational purposes.

The framework further establishes standards for the use of AI in institutional media, communications and promotional materials. These measures are intended to protect official symbols and visual identity while ensuring published content remains accurate and complies with approved standards.

SPEA said the initiative forms part of its broader efforts to keep pace with technological developments while maintaining education standards, protecting learners’ rights and preserving the human element in teaching and learning.
