An important decision that parents have to make is when their child should start school. This is particularly important when there are specific eligibility criteria that must be met. Schools in the UAE follow specific age eligibility requirements for students at different levels. This is why it is crucial for parents to understand the admission requirements and the exact cut-off dates.
Starting from the 2026–2027 academic year, UAE schools whose academic year begins in August or September have introduced updated admission age cut-off rules for Kindergarten and Grade 1. These rules apply to new entrants who were not enrolled in an educational system in 2025–2026, without changing the progression of children already enrolled. This update helps parents determine whether their sons or daughters meet the age requirements to start school. The first step is to check the student’s date of birth against the school’s eligibility criteria.
Identify the school’s academic-year start
The first thing parents should do is check when the academic year actually starts. This is because the applicable age cut-off depends on the school calendar. Schools where the academic year begins in August or September use 31 December of the enrollment year as the age cut-off date.
For other educational institutions where the academic year starts in April, the existing 31 March cut-off date continues to apply. This is particularly important for families considering schools that follow different curricula or academic calendars.
Find the correct cut-off date
It’s a simple matter to clearly understand the correct cut-off date. UAE schools whose academic year starts in August or September calculate the student’s age as of 31 December of the admission year. This means the student must reach the required age on or before this date.
For schools where the academic year begins in April, the cut-off date is 31 March. Therefore, parents should first identify which academic calendar the school they choose follows to determine the applicable cut-off date.
For 2026–2027, the basic age requirements for August/September-start schools are:
– KG1: 4 years old by 31 December 2026
– KG2: 5 years old by 31 December 2026
– Grade 1: 6 years old by 31 December 2026
Match FS/KG/Grade 1 Levels
Another important matter is to choose the curriculum the parents would like their children to study. This is also a clear matter according to the UAE’s updated admission-age policy. For instance, Pre-K corresponds to Foundation Stage 1 (FS1) in the British curriculum, while KG1 corresponds to Foundation Stage 2 (FS2), KG2 corresponds to Year 1, and Grade 1 corresponds to Year 2. A clear understanding of these different equivalencies is extremely important for families who are considering a transfer between different educational systems.
Work Through Birth-Date Examples
To compare the child’s birth date with the applicable cut-off date, parents should check when the school calculates the age for admission. For 2026–2027, if the school uses 31 December as the cut-off date, a child born on 14 October 2022 meets the age requirement for KG1/FS2, subject to the transitional arrangements below. Similarly, children born on 19 December 2020 meet the age requirement for Grade 1/Year 2, as they turn six by the cut-off date.
When children are born close to the cut-off date, for example, on 31 December 2022, they may be eligible to begin KG1/FS2 in the 2026–2027 academic year. A one-day difference can make a real difference, as a child born on 1 January 2023 will not have reached the age of four by 31 December 2026. One option for parents is to consider the April 2027 intake at schools where the 31 March 2027 cut-off date applies.
Confirm Exceptions and Transfers
Another important matter for parents is to check if there are any exceptions or transitional arrangements that apply to their child. There are certain criteria for the 2026–2027 academic year. For example, children born between 1 September and 31 December 2021 who were ineligible for enrollment in 2025–2026 and have never been registered in a school system may be registered in KG1 or KG2, subject to the applicable assessment and admission requirements.
In British-curriculum schools, additional arrangements apply to certain children entering FS1 or FS2, including readiness assessments and a one-time transition provision in 2026–2027 for previously unenrolled children born between 1 September and 31 December 2022, allowing parents and schools to decide between FS1 and FS2 based on the child’s readiness.
When children transfer from one school or curriculum to another, or arrive from outside the UAE, their date of birth is not the only factor determining placement. The Ministry of Education notes that placement largely depends on the last grade the child successfully completed. Therefore, parents should submit the child’s previous school reports and ensure that all transfer requirements are met before applying for admission.
