Japanese carmakers unite to showcase synthetic fuel vehicles

At Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai

A consortium of major Japanese companies—ENEOS Corporation, Suzuki Motor Corporation, Subaru Corporation, Daihatsu Motor, Toyota Motor Corporation, and Mazda Motor Corporation—has announced its collaboration to supply passenger vehicles powered by synthetic fuel for Expo 2025 in Osaka, Kansai, Japan.

The initiative facilitates the transportation of Expo 2025 visitors and stakeholders within the event venue while showcasing the potential of low-emission mobility solutions.

The vehicles include models from each participating car manufacturer and are powered by a synthetic fuel blend developed by ENEOS. The company supplies this innovative fuel at a demonstration plant in its Central Technical Research Laboratory.

The fuel, backed by funding from the Green Innovation Fund of the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), results from cutting-edge research into sustainable energy technologies.

ENEOS supplies synthetic fuel for Toyota and Mazda vehicles to transport Expo 2025 visitors. Meanwhile, Suzuki, Subaru, and Daihatsu use synthetic fuel in cars designated to transport other related parties during the April 13 to October 13, 2025 event. Prior testing by all five automakers has confirmed the compatibility of the synthetic fuel with conventional petrol engines, ensuring reliable vehicle performance throughout the Expo 2025 period.

Synthetic fuel is regarded as a clean energy solution that combines hydrogen, sourced from renewable energy, with captured carbon dioxide. This approach offers significant reductions in carbon emissions across the entire fuel lifecycle.

Unlike some alternative energy sources, synthetic fuels can be distributed through existing fuel infrastructure, making them a practical and scalable solution for reducing emissions from internal combustion engine vehicles.

By deploying these vehicles during Expo 2025, the companies aim to showcase synthetic fuel as a viable technology that supports carbon neutrality without completely abandoning combustion engine platforms. Their efforts closely align with Expo 2025’s environmental ambitions, as outlined in the Expo 2025 Green Vision, which calls for innovative, sustainable solutions to be presented and implemented throughout the event.

The automakers’ partnership not only reinforces the feasibility of synthetic fuels in the near term but also signals a broader commitment from Japan’s automotive and energy industries toward greener transport options.

The collaboration provides an international platform to demonstrate how traditional automotive technologies can evolve to meet the challenges of climate change, contributing to a more sustainable future without sacrificing existing mobility standards.
